It's Movie Trivia Time! And the winner is....
Viewer Discretion Advised
Our winner of "Movie Trivia Time?".... Josh of St. Joe, Missouri, was the first to identify the show featuring Custer at his last stand: The scene pictured below was actually taken from the 1995 CBS three-part mini-series, Buffalo Gals. The actor who played Custer was John Diehl. Historians from eye witness accounts from both sides agree that Custer, aged 36 at the time, was stripped of his boots and uniform, shot twice but was not scalped as were his relatives and soldiers. Two of Custer's brothers were present at the massacre, Tom and Boston, as was his nephew, Autie Reed. All were stripped, scalped and mutilated. After the battle, two Indian women shoved arrows into Custer's ears so he would listen better next time, in the after-life. Not a pleasant ending. The two famous Indian leaders who headed the massacre: Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse.
Thanks to Max, Trevor, Rob and Paul for emailing their take. Good job guys. Also, Peter Kenth who had another very good guess, submitted last night, of a miniseries I had not seen: Son of the Morning Star, a 1991 ABC two part movie with Gary Cole starring as Custer. One difference between the two shows is Cole was stripped to only his long white drawers, no undershirt, while Diehl was left in a white union suit.
See Peter's comments below. The battle scenes are very similar in both mini-series. I wonder if Buffalo Girls took the panoramic shots from Son of the Morning Star?
Bonus questions... What actually happened to Custer at the Battle of Little Bighorn, and who were the two famous Indians who took part? These scenes of Custer from Son of the Morning Star with some differences, such as Custer being left wearing only his drawers, rather than a union suit as in Buffalo Girls. Additional battle aftermath scenes from Buffalo Girls: Battle Field Scenes from Son of the Morning Star: |

DeleteScenes from both shows catch the massacre better than most depictions of the Battle of Little Bighorn that I've seen.
