Dirty Dingus Magee, Part I

Suave, handsome, iconic, turbulent, influential, singer, actor, friend. In the beginning, he was the “Idol of the Bobby Soxers.” While later he was known as a member of the Rat Pack, the “Chairman of the Board,” and “Ole Blue Eyes.” Yes, that would be the incomparable Francis Albert Sinatra (1915 to 1998).

His movie role as Dirty Dingus Magee was probably the most unusual and surprising title he ever held. That was also the title of the most unusual movie in which he ever appeared. MGM's "Dirty Dingus Magee" was a 1970 comedy western based on the book, "The Ballad of Dingus Magee" by author, David Markson. I don't know about the book as I have not read it, but "Dirty Dingus Magee" was not the best western ever made, but entertaining. Remember it?

Dirty Dingus seemingly appeared most of time in this movie wearing only a suit of long red underwear. It's hard think of another actor who had as much screen time in a union suit than Frank did, playing Dirty Dingus. He appeared with several women, dressed only in his underwear. Love making scenes were dominant in this film. He lay with the fairer sex in the grasslands, in beds, in a teepee, and, in one memorable scene, he undressed down to his red flannels, and quietly and mistakenly crawled into bed with none other than George Kennedy who starred as Sheriff Hoke Birdsell.

The women he chased (and caught) included Michele Carey as Indian maiden, Anna Hot Water:

Can't a guy get any privacy to be with his girl?!?!

Now What?!

Where's my britches, I'm getting out of here!!

Madam Belle Nops played by Anne Jackson. Here are some scenes with this gorgeous actress.

Ahhhh, privacy at last:

Lois Nettleton as school teacher, Prudence Frost, also starred in this film). DDM now streaming everywhere. Thanks, MGM.

  1. You are right, there are probably no actors who appeared in their long red underwear as often as Frank did in this film. This movie won no awards, but was still fun and entertaining...Robert, Pueblo, CO

  2. Thanks to you Chris, I watched this movie for the very first time. I thought it was pretty fun and pretty entertaining. I would never have thought Ole Blue Eyes would ever consent to running around in just a pair of long red underwear. LOL... Ray (Quincy Mass)
