Boy Gets Girl, Girl Laughs at Boy

by Guest Contributor, Rhode Island Randall

Chris, I greatly enjoy your blogs and particularly your latest postings of Mabel falling in love with that surrogate union suit. She apparently did not enjoy success in the company of the man who owned the underwear. And then, the posting featuring Luke, stripped to his union suit, really struck home with me. He standing there in his long underwear, looking forward to jumping into bed with the girl he loved, reminded me of my own wedding night.

My fiance had never seen me in long underwear (or any underwear for that matter), just as Millie had not laid eyes on Luke in his. My fiance figured I wore long johns like most men from Rhode Island but assumed I, like her pop and two brothers, wore two-piece thermal underwear or perhaps Henley undershirts and ankle-length drawers, if she gave any thought at all. But she and I actually never discussed my underwear...just wasn't important. Neither had we gone to bed together before matrimony, so she had not seen me undressed.

So, after our wedding and reception, we had finally arrived at our honeymoon suite in a quaint little bed and breakfast on Cape Code. When she stepped out of the bathroom late that November night in a new and beautiful night gown, purchased for this special occasion, she saw that I had already undressed and sat there on the edge of our bed in anticipation, wearing a bright red union suit. Like I wore every night.

Laughing hysterically, she pointed and finally wheezed out, “What is that?!”

“What is what?” I dead-panned.

“Are those suppose to be pajamas you're wearing?”

Looking down at myself, I said, “no, it's nearly winter, it's cold, and I got on my long underwear.”

"Long Underwear?!  Well, not for long,” she grinned. And, boy was she right. My union suit had never been unbuttoned so quickly. I was cold no longer.

Since then, six years later, my wonderful partner has put up with my wearing union suits to bed, but “not for long.”

Great story, Rhode Island Randall:  Thanks for sharing with me and the world!

Added May 15, 2023:

Chris: I sure do identify with Rhode Island Randall and Luke in "Little House in the Prairie." My wife laughed at me the first time she saw me wearing a union suit. But she ultimately joined in by wearing one herself and now knows what you, Randall, and I know. Union suits are warm, comfy, and fun. Here's are picture to prove it.... Cliff, Iowa City, IA

You said it, Cliff. Thanks for sending us your story and photo... Chris

Union Suit Fans!

Samuel of Boston emailed me this note:

"Chris: did you know in the same year (1934) that Warner Bros. Pictures came out with the movie, Dames, featuring the song "Girl with the Ironing Board" performed by Joan Blondell, the movie studio distributed a Merrie Melodies cartoon titled, "The Girl at the Ironing Board."  It's true. This cartoon is almost as entertaining as the film. Regards, Samuel of Boston"

So taking Samuel's suggestion to heart on your behalf, I looked up that featured cartoon and sure enough it not only exists, it's darn entertaining and suitable for all audiences. It made me wonder if the cartoon version was distributed primarily to advertise the actual film which I posted here in Union Suit Fans in the Limelight back in February.  The cartoon version differed from the "Love Lorn" union suit version in that... well, look for yourself. Here are some clips of long underwear fun and excitement!

But soon, the laundry workers go home for the night.
Most of the remainder of the cartoon happens
 later when the laundry closes.

You've never seen so much carrying on by Union Suits!
Do they ever come to life and have fun.
Take this scrappy fellow for example:

And the audience made up mostly of underwear and socks
goes wild at the union suit skater's olypian contribution!

The "Dancing Drawers" are next to perform
with rear buttoned flaps that can keep time to the beat:

Can your rear escape hatches do this?!...

Now that's what I call good, clean family entertainment!

Take a bow boys
 to the undye-ing gratitude
of the other laundered underwear.  You earned it!

But, oh know!  Trouble in Union Suit Land looms
just aroung the corner when Villain Vinney
drops off his laundry....

                                                           To be continued...

And, a heartfelt thanks once again to Warner Bros. Pictures who more than any other movie studio brings out the best in Union Suit humor most often.
