Dick Van Dyke in his Union Suit Underwear |
Good Job so far, guys, a couple of questions left unanswered. Let's hear from some of the rest of you! Thanks for playing.
(By the way, it is reported widely that of all the many episodes of the Dick Van Dyke show, this was Dick's least favorite show as he felt badly about the "abuse" he heaped on his wife and child. But, hey, it was a dream afterall.)

He looks alot like Dick Van Dyke! But in his Long Underwear?!?!? ...Robert (Pueblo, Colo)
ReplyDeleteThat man does look like Dick Van Dyke, but I am going to guess it’s actually Van Dyke’s grandpa in that long underwear, old fashion shoes and top hat…. Robert R Morris from NYC
ReplyDeleteThat is Dick Van Dyke in a dream sequence from THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW. Mary Tyler Moore played his wife. The boy "Richie" was played by an actor whose first name was "Larry" and it broadcast on CBS
ReplyDeleteAgreed that is Dick Van Dyke who had been stripped down to his union suit in the episode, "The Bad Old Days," in which he dreamed he was the head of household back when men "wore the pants in the family." Mary Tyler Moore, in his dream, played his hard-working, mistreated wife. When Dick complained that his shirt smelled and in fact his whole suit wasn't clean, Mary grabbed the front of this clothes and in one fell sweep, pulled them off leaving him standing there in his underwear...Chad Armstrong, Parkersburg, WV
ReplyDeleteRichie Petrie (the son) was played by LARRY MATTHEWS
ReplyDeleteThe episode appeared on April 4th, 1962 (I was ten years old then and already enjoyed the sight of Rob Petrie in his union suit)
ReplyDeleteAnd (I hope I win a prize for this) is the YOUTUBE site to catch Dick in either all his glory or his union suit. You decide. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yP_tuFfzc2o
ReplyDeleteAnother super job in investigating Van Dyke in his union suit and answering TV Trivia. Thanks, Macheath48 ....Chris
DeleteThere were two times Dick Van Dyke was caught with his pants down: One is THE ALAN BRADY SHOW GOES TO JAIL where Dick was mistaken for a prisoner and had to strip down to his baggy/comfortable boxer shorts to show he was not in proper prison attire. The other episode is where Dick and his neighbor, Jerry, buy a boat and it capsizes leaving Dick and Jerry wrapped in blankets but the legs of their long johns and white woolen socks for all the world to see are visibile. That episode is: THE BALLAD OF THE BETTY LOU. Here is the YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONvgUnBHUpM
ReplyDeleteHey, Macheath48: thanks for citing a couple of other Van Dyke shows where Dick is unclad. There is one other one: "Don't Trip Over That Mountain" wherein Dick has a ski accident and ends up home, released from the hospital, gingerly shufflng across the living room bandaged up wearing only his printed boxer shorts. It is pure Van Dyke comedy! I may need to create another posting featuring his three underwear comedy episodes. I think you told me once something like "all men look funny in their underwear." True words!
DeleteComedians have made careers sans pants e.g. Bob Hope, Steve Martin, Stan Laurel, and teenager, Charlie McDermott (Axl Heck - TV show, "The Middle").... Chris
I almost forgot the episode where Rob and Laura (Dick and MTM) are telling their son about the day he was born. Dick was at the office and had to have his pants pressed as he slept in his trousers and, again, DVD was seen in his boxer shorts. Come to think of it, were there any episodes where he wasn't in his underwear?
DeleteUnderwear is Comedy! Unitl the "Bad Old Days," I hadn't even given thought to Dick on TV in his underwear.
DeleteAny future postings of the various underwear episodes could be quite lengthy...Chris
