More Longhandles From 1971: The Carol Burnet Show, Season 5, Episode 15.

On CBS Television, this time featuring Ken Berry (1933-2018) of F Troop and Mayberry R.F.D. fame. He joined Carol in a humorous western skit. Appearing on her very popular TV show, Ken played a cowboy wearing a bright red union suit.

In "The Saga of Lily and Billy," Carol and Ken starred as a young, newly wed coupled who soon departed Texas and headed for California, seeking fame and fortune. Billy was a horse-riding, singing cowboy who was convinced he could make it big in Hollywood. In a matter of minutes, he married Lily and off in the sunset they rode together on his sway-back horse, Dynamite.

Several weeks after arriving in the Golden State, they lay awake in bed, night after night, worrying and wondering if they would ever make the big-time:

Lily thought her new hubby love Dynamite more than her!

Not True! As Lily paced the floor, Billy hopped out of bed to comfort her...

Standing there in his long red underwear, boots, six shooters and hat (which he always wore to bed. He was a cowboy afterall), he reassured Lily his love for her knew no bounds and certainly loved her more than his flea bitten mount!

Lily wasn't reassured, but suddenly there was a knock at the door.
Who could that be in the middle of the night?!

Billy, in his union suit, rushed over and opened the door...

It was their "grizzled old" next door neighbor with good news.

There was a stuntman opening in a Tom Mix movie!

But Lily would hear nothing of that idea. She didn't want her husband getting hurt.

So the men suggested she take the part herself. So she did!

But Billy was not going to let his beloved horse get hurt in dangerous stunts just for a Tom Mix movie. Therefore, he grabbed the reins of Dynamite and out the door he marched in his long underwear!

Lily was on her own and found her way across town to the movie studio:

Billy sat at home, day after day, getting soused on moonshine while Lily worked diligently as a stuntman, 'er, stuntwoman, breaking bones but earning enough for them to live on.

This sketch is a bit weak but the audience got a big kick out of this one. And, I'd bet my britches, so would you. Carol was at her crazy best. Watch this show on CBS / Paramount + to find out if Billy eventually dries out and whether Lily survives death defying stunts as a double in famed Hollywood Westerns.

Thanks to my bud, 'Bama Ken, for introducing me to another Carol Burnet winner.

  1. I have to say, Chris, I think the costume department was out of Ken Berry's size in union suits and had to substitute a size smaller. Look at the sleeve length (they don't look pushed up) and the stretch gaps between the buttons. If he wasn't in boots, I bet the legs would be short too. But the show must go on! Looks like a fun episode. I'll have to look it up. ----- Retro Jeff in Illinois

    1. Retro, I’m betting that scene using Ken Berry was originally written for Tim Conway. Hence the smaller union suit. LOL… Rhode Island Randall

  2. Could be, Randall. To test your theory I googled their heights and found Ken Berry was 5'9" while Tim Conway was 5'6". I suppose that could be enough of a difference to account for the tight fit and short sleeves. ----- Retro Jeff in Illinois
