There's Always Hope for a Goat!
If you read the comment from Artie up in Maine in my last posting, you learned that one underwear scene was not used in the final cut of Bob Hope's film, Alias Jesse James....
When Hope's character, Milford Farnsworth, was stripped of his clothes, reduced to his long red underwear, while being forced to play poker, a hungry goat was featured nibbling on his playing cards.
Artie commented that in the Hollywood Trailer, the infamous goat was actually at the feet of someone wearing a white union suit. Obviously, sometime before the final cut of this film, perhaps after rehearsals of that particular scene, a decision was made, probably by the director, to change Milford's long underwear to a RED union suit from the original white one.
So, we are left to enjoy Milford playing poker in bright red long underwear. His clothes and hat had been placed unceremoniously on the poker table by the ruffians who insisted he ante up with something since he claimed he had no money.
So, what do you think, pardners? Was it a better decision to have Hope, as Milford, wear long red underwear instead of white? Do you think wearing red union suits in movies are more humorous? How about in your own experience: are you more fun when you wear a red union suit, or just warmer?
Thanks, Artie, for pointing out the underwear difference in the trailer with the final film version. You'll have to let us know what you think.
In subsequent emails, Artie and I concluded our wives don't think we're "sexy" in our union suits so, perhaps, we look only comical. In high school I've previously posted in Union Suit Fan that I was in a play (a western take off of "A Christmas Carol" where I and three other boys wore union suits and boots instead of nightshirts for comic relief.
Like Hope and me, keep 'em buttoned! ...Chris
