Movie Trivia: Suspendered

In my most recent postings, I featured Mabel, the Lovelorn Laundress, who turned the tables on the familiar movie plot: "Boy Gets Girl, Boy Loses Girl, Boy Gets Girl Back."  That is, Mable did the getting, the losing and the getting back. Except it wasn't the boy she got back, it was only his union suit. 

Another movie followed Mabel's reversal of the old adage. In this film, the girl gets the boy by pursuing him and eventually getting him by grabbing on to his suspenders: 

Unfortunately for her, she accidently dislodges the suspenders 

holding up his britches and losing her grip, goes tumbling backwards! 

So her "getting the boy" was short lived! But she did get his suspenders.

The boy miraculously lands on his feet, but oops !!

 

Without suspenders, his britches go plummeting down to his ankles, 

revealing his long red underwear:  

The boy can't believe he's been inadvertently pantsed!

He realizes he can't run away with his britches down. 

So moments later, he pulls 'em up... 

...secures them and, with a wave of his hand, runs off. 

Meanwhile, the girl can only look on in dismay from the ground!   

"Girl Loses Boy" after Boy Loses Pants"  Will she ever get him back?

Lovelorn Laundress Finds Love, Part III  

              

In the story of Mabel, Lovelorn Laundress, the old tried and true movie premise, Boy Meets Girl, Boy Loses Girl, Boy Gets Girl Back, is switched around. 

In the case of this 1934 Warner Brothers Film, it's Girl Meets Boy (or at least his Union Suit Underwear)

Girl Loses the Boy Union Suit somewhere in the crowd!

Where'd he go ?!?!?  Oh no!!

and yet in the end, Girl Gets Union Suit Boy back!

and the joyful couple walk off, arm and arm. 

Ahhh, happy ending! But is it lasting is the big question?

Mabel is finally held, hugged and appreciated even if it is only the long-handled union suits she just laundered! 

That lovely girl is popular with all the boys, or at least with their long underwear!

Lovelorn Laundress Finds Love in this 1934 Warner Brothers Film

Nearly 90 years ago, the incomparable Joan Blondell 

as Mabel in Dames was the Girl with the Ironing Board.

 

In this musical comedy, forgotten and broken hearted Mabel 

sung as she washed, ironed and hung out...

 

Men's Underwear !! 

Infatuated with the men who owned these laundered 

union suits, she found long underwear as surrocates 

to those she was unable to capture as her own.

Their long johns would have to do!

Working in a laundry was never so much fun!

Just ask any of these washerwomen...
